A mailbox is a delivery address assigned to your name, identified with a unique code, that you use when shopping at online stores. The mailbox service receives your orders, registers them with your code, groups them and delivers them to your home or makes them ready for pickup. In Panama, opening a mailbox is free and takes less than five minutes.
What is a mailbox for?
Many online stores don't deliver directly to Panama, or do so with unclear costs and timelines. Others deliver only in the city. A mailbox solves three problems at once:
- It gives you an address that stores do accept. You type that address at checkout, just as if it were your home.
- Someone receives and looks after your package. It doesn't depend on you being home when it arrives.
- They deliver to your home or you pick up whenever it suits you. Outside the metropolitan area, delivery is coordinated with Servientrega, with a prior quote.
How does a mailbox work step by step?
- 1. You sign up. You fill out a form with your details, your address in Panama and your contact info. You receive a unique mailbox code (for example, MADB1071).
- 2. You receive your shopping address by email. That address includes your name and your code. Save it; you will use it on every order.
- 3. You shop online. In the store's shipping address field, you paste your mailbox address. The code goes next to your name; never leave it out.
- 4. Your order arrives at the mailbox. It is registered with your tracking number and your code.
- 5. You get notified and receive it. You get a message when your package is ready, with the billed weight and the cost. You choose home delivery or pickup.
What do I need to open a mailbox in Panama?
- Full name and ID card or passport.
- Residential address in Panama, with province. The postal code is optional; if you want to add it, you can look it up at codigospostalespanama.gob.pa.
- WhatsApp number and an active email (that's where your mailbox address arrives).
- Choose an account type based on how much you shop and whether you want home delivery included.
There is no opening fee or monthly charge. You pay only when you receive a package, by weight.
How do I enter the mailbox address in an online store?
This is the step where most mistakes happen. The rule is simple: your name and your code go together in the name field, and the rest of the address is copied exactly as you received it by email.
Example of how it looks in a store's form:
- Name: Ana Pérez MADB1071
- Address: the line you received by email
- City, province, postal code: the ones you received by email
- Phone: the one you received by email
If the code doesn't appear next to the name, the package arrives unidentified and is delayed while the owner is located.
How much does it cost to use a mailbox?
It depends on the account type and the weight of each package. Mail Drop Box has three plans: Basic Plan, Free Drop (with delivery included in the metropolitan area) and Elite Plan. Per-pound prices are on the pricing page and don't change depending on the store you buy from.
Two things worth knowing before your first order:
- The weight billed is the package's real weight when received.
- Packages have a free storage period; after that, a daily charge applies. Ideally, pick up or schedule delivery as soon as you're notified.
Frequently asked questions
Can I have a single mailbox for my whole family?
Yes, but every order must carry the account holder's name next to the code. If another person buys under their own name, the package may go unidentified.
What happens if I buy several products from different stores?
Each one arrives separately and is registered with your code. You can pick them up together or receive them in a single delivery.
Are there products I can't send to the mailbox?
Perfumes, batteries, medications and some liquids require special handling. Ask on WhatsApp before buying to avoid delays.
How long does my package take to arrive?
It depends on the store and the type of product. With your tracking number you can follow it, and we let you know as soon as it's ready.
